Carrying What You Were Called to Carry

Ministry, business, family, health, community. Somewhere along the way we picked up more than we were ever asked to carry, and now we are wondering why our arms hurt.

The exhaustion you feel is often not a sign that you need to try harder. It is a sign that some of what you are carrying was never yours to begin with. Other people's expectations. Old assignments God already released you from. Responsibilities you took on because no one else would, even though no one asked you to.

There is a real weight that comes with a real calling. Jesus never promised us a weightless life. He promised His yoke would fit, and that He would carry it with us. A yoke that fits is not the absence of weight. It is the presence of alignment. It is work you were built for, in a rhythm you can actually sustain, with a partner who will not let you fall.

The question is not, am I doing a lot. The question is, am I carrying what I was called to carry.

That is a harder question, and it takes some honest sitting with God to answer. Here are the questions I keep bringing to Him.

What am I doing out of obedience, and what am I doing out of fear. Fear will keep you busy for a lifetime and never once look like laziness. It hides very well inside a full calendar.

What has quietly ended, that I am still doing out of habit. Seasons end. Assignments end. Roles end. Sometimes the hardest thing to release is a good thing that used to be right and is no longer yours.

Who am I performing for. If a hidden version of this life still honored God, would I still be building it, or would I quietly walk away.

You are allowed to put things down. You are allowed to hand back what was never yours. You are allowed to say, this is not mine to carry anymore, and let the sentence be complete without a defense at the end of it.

Then, with lighter arms, pick up what is actually yours. Carry it well. Carry it for the long haul. Carry it with joy, because a life aligned with your real assignment feels different, even when it is heavy.

Not everything on your plate is yours to hold. Put down what was never yours to begin with, and watch how much strength returns for the work God actually put in your hands.
