The Rhythm of Rest

For a long stretch of my life, I treated rest as something I earned. If I worked hard enough, prayed long enough, served faithfully enough, then maybe I could sit down. Rest was the reward at the end of a very long line of yeses, and the line kept getting longer.

Then my body forced the conversation. A wave of fatigue I could not caffeinate my way out of. A tension headache that had made itself at home behind my right eye. A quiet, persistent sense that I was doing more and feeling less. My body was not being dramatic. It was being honest.

Scripture is not shy about rest. On the seventh day God rested, not because He was tired, but because rest was worth modeling. Jesus withdrew to lonely places, not once or twice, but as a rhythm. If the Son of God built retreat into His week, the rest of us can stop pretending we are the exception.

Rest is not a reward for finishing your to-do list. It is the ground you build the list on. Without it, everything you produce is a little more brittle, a little more anxious, a little less like you.

Here is what I am learning, slowly and imperfectly:

Rest is a decision, not a leftover. If I wait for a quiet week, it will never come. I have to place rest on the calendar the way I place meetings, and defend it with the same seriousness.

Rest is bigger than sleep. Sleep is essential, but so is a walk without a podcast, a meal without a screen, a Saturday morning where nothing is required of me. My nervous system needs quiet, not just my eyelids.

Rest is a spiritual posture. It is the daily admission that the world will keep turning without my grip on it. God is not asking me to hold everything together. He is asking me to trust the One who does.

If you are worn down as you read this, hear me gently. You do not need a new productivity system. You need permission. Consider this yours. Close the laptop for an hour. Take the walk. Sit on the porch with your tea and let your shoulders drop away from your ears.

You are not a machine with a soul attached. You are a soul with a body to steward. Rest is how you honor both.
