When Healing Takes Longer Than You Hoped
Some seasons of healing are dramatic. A breakthrough moment, a prayer answered overnight, a door that swings wide open after years of pushing. Those stories make good testimonies, and I love them. I have lived a few of them.
Most seasons are not like that. Most healing looks like small daily choices repeated for longer than you thought you could bear. A supplement taken faithfully. A boundary held one more time. A walk taken when the couch was calling. A prayer whispered without any feeling behind it. Then again the next day. Then again.
If you are in that kind of season, this one is for you.
The slow healing is still healing. The absence of a lightning bolt is not the absence of God. He is often most present in the ordinary faithfulness, in the ninetieth day of a habit that finally becomes a rhythm, in the quiet strengthening you cannot see because it is happening under the skin.
Here is what has helped me stay tender when the timeline stretches.
I stop measuring progress in feelings. Feelings are honest but they are not the whole truth. Some days I feel further along than I am. Some days I feel further behind than I am. The scoreboard is not in my chest, it is in my life. Am I sleeping a little better than a year ago. Am I reacting a little less. Am I present with the people I love. That is progress.
I keep the circle small and honest. In slow seasons, opinions multiply. Everyone has a protocol, a verse, a story about their cousin. Most of it is well meant, none of it is your assignment. Keep two or three people close who know the whole picture and will pray without prescribing.
I look for God in the middle, not just at the finish line. He is not withholding Himself until you cross a threshold. He is walking every step with you, and part of the maturity of healing is learning to notice Him inside the process instead of demanding He speed it up.
If today is another day of the same choices with no visible reward, I want to remind you of something. God is not late. He is not distracted. He is not disappointed in you for how long this has taken. He is the one who started the healing, and He is the one who will finish it.
Keep walking. The slow healing is still healing.
